OLD Photo contest for early-stage researchers: terms & conditions

Timeframe

The contest starts on 1 September 2020 and ends with a final voting during the EuroTech event “Universities of Science and Technology: Designing a Resilient Europe” on 10 November 2020. It is divided into 3 phases:

  • Submission phase: 1 September – 20 October 2020, 12:00 CET
  • Voting phase: 22 October, 12:00 – 9 November, 12:00 CET
  • Final voting: 10 November 2020

Who can participate

The contest is open to all students, PhD students and postdoctoral researchers with a PhD title awarded in 2016 or later, enrolled at one of the six EuroTech Universities at the time of the contest (01/09/2020-10/11/2020), and working on a topic that falls into one of the five EuroTech Focus Areas (see below).

The six EuroTech Universities are:

  • Technical University of Denmark (DTU)
  • École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL)
  • École Polytechnique (L’X)
  • Technion – Israel Institute of Technology
  • Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e)
  • Technical University of Munich (TUM)

With his/her submission, the entrant confirms that (s)he fulfils these criteria. Documentation to prove his/her status may be asked at any time during the contest.

Submission

Pictures can be submitted exclusively by using the form on the following page: www.eurotech-universities-hle.eu/photo-contest. It is possible to submit up to three pictures. In case of more than three contributions by an entrant, only the last three will be taken into account. All submissions will be checked by the EuroTech team and, if found eligible, be put online together with the other submissions on 21 October. Entries that are not complete or do not comply with the eligibility criteria will be rejected. By entering this competition, the entrant agrees to be bound by the present terms and conditions.

Voting

All submitted pictures that comply with these terms and conditions will be published on 22 October on the following website: www.eurotech-universities-hle.eu/photo-contest and be open for voting. Voters can vote for multiple pictures but only cast one vote per picture. The three pictures which will have received the most votes by 9 November, 12:00 CET will be presented at the EuroTech event on 10 November and put to a final vote by the attendees of the event. For this final vote, the previous votes will not be taken into account, i.e. the final voting will start at zero. The three finalists and the final winner will be announced publicly. The winner will be informed by e-mail within 7 days after the voting with further information on how to claim the prize.

Theme

The picture should depict how you conduct your research in times of COVID-19. The research topic must be linked to one of the five EuroTech Focus Areas in a broad sense:

  • Entrepreneurship & Innovation
  • Health & Bioengineering
  • Sustainable Society
  • Additive Manufacturing
  • AI for Engineering Systems

Technical requirements

  • The picture can be a photo taken with a camera/smartphone, an image from the lab or a computer-generated image. Alteration by image-editing software is allowed. Scientific posters and infographics are not permitted.
  • The file size must not exceed 10MB
  • File format: JPG or PNG
  • A resolution of 150 dpi is recommended

Legal requirements

The submitted picture must not be unlawful, misleading, discriminatory or fraudulent. It must not infringe or breach someone else’s rights, including their intellectual property and privacy rights. The entrant consents to the use of his/her submitted picture and relevant information (entrant’s name and affiliation, title, description and category of the picture) on the channels of the EuroTech Universities Alliance and its six partner universities for the purpose of this contest and the EuroTech event mentioned above as well as the reporting about it. The entrant will always be credited when his/her picture is being used.

The prize

The winner will receive a grant of up to €500. This grant can be used to cover travel costs and/or participation fees of a scientific conference (or course, workshop, etc.) of his/her choice or to cover the costs of a subscription to a scientific journal of his/her choice. The expenses occurred have to be justified and documented, and claimed before 31 December 2021. The grant can be used as a partial funding. In addition, the winner will receive support for promoting his/her research at EuroTech level and within the six EuroTech Universities. Respective activities will be bespoke and can for instance include promotion on social media, websites, newsletters, etc. The prize is non-transferable.

Final clause

We reserve the right, in our sole discretion, to cancel, terminate, modify, or suspend the contest, should we deem it necessary. All decisions are final. For any questions, please write an e-mail to events@eurotech-universities.eu.
